A Slower Way In: What to Expect from Private Breathwork
If you have been searching for breathwork in Byron Bay, you may have discovered that breathwork can mean many different things.
Some practices use fast, intense breathing. Others take place in large groups or focus primarily on breathing techniques designed to create a particular physical or emotional response.
At Rise Temple, my approach to private breathwork in Byron Bay is intentionally different.
Sessions are slow, personal and spacious. Rather than pushing the body towards an intense experience, we use slow conscious breathing to help settle the nervous system, turn attention inward and create space between ourselves and the constant activity of the thinking mind.
What happens during a private breathwork session?
A private 1:1 breathwork session gives us something that can be difficult to create in a group environment: time.
At Rise Temple in the Byron Bay hinterland, a private Breath & Belief session takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
And we don't begin by immediately lying down and breathing.
We begin with you.
The first part of your session is conversational. We explore what is happening in your life, what has brought you here and any beliefs or recurring patterns that may be sitting beneath the surface.
People come to breathwork in the Northern Rivers for many different reasons. You may be experiencing stress, burnout or overwhelm. You might recognise patterns within relationships or work that keep repeating. Or perhaps life simply doesn't feel quite right and you want the space to understand why.
What arises during this conversation helps shape the breathwork journey that follows.
A slower approach to breathwork
One of the important differences between breathwork at Rise Temple and many other breathwork practices is the way we breathe.
I don't use rapid or forceful breathing.
Instead, we work with a slow, conscious breath designed to allow the body and nervous system to gradually settle.
As the breathing slows, we begin moving away from constant analysing, anticipating and controlling. The breathwork then develops into a guided journey incorporating visualisation and meditation.
For people looking for breathwork for stress and burnout, this slower approach can offer an opportunity to stop pushing and simply turn inward.
Breathwork, meditation and witness consciousness
Breathwork at Rise Temple also works alongside meditation.
Many people believe meditation means learning how to stop thinking. When thoughts continue appearing, they assume they're doing something wrong.
Instead of fighting thought, I teach you to begin observing thought.
You can notice a thought without following it.
You can experience an emotion without immediately creating a story around it.
This is the beginning of witness consciousness, an important part of the meditation practice I teach at Rise Temple.
As the body settles through slow breathing, there can be greater space to experience this awareness directly.
What might you experience?
There is no experience you are supposed to have during a private breathwork session.
Some people experience deep relaxation. Others become aware of emotions, memories, imagery or physical sensations. There may be unexpected insights or periods of profound quiet.
None is more successful than another.
The intention isn't to chase an extraordinary experience. It is to become more aware of what is already happening within you.
Afterwards, we leave time to talk about whatever arose and allow the experience to integrate before you return to everyday life.

Is private breathwork right for you?
You don't need previous breathwork or meditation experience.
You don't need to know exactly what you want to explore.
And you don't need to be good at quieting your mind.
Sometimes the most meaningful shift doesn't come from finding another thing to do.
It comes from becoming still enough to notice what was already there.
